About the Project

The Forster Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Forster name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Forster name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Forster's), by time period (18th Century Forster's), or by topic (Forster DNA, Forster Occupations, Forster Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Related Surnames and Surname Variants

Here are some branches that need work/research. Some regions may have profiles, but other may not. But the more we're able to map out the tree, the more we understand about the family lines, which may or may not be related ... given the history of the surname itself.

  • Forster of Stokesley (this is a cadet branch of Adderstone, Northumb. ... Not sure if any profiles exist on WikiTree for members of this line) ... pedigree.
  • Stafford & Foster.[1]
  • Cumberland line...
  • Kendal line...
  • Ipsley ... seen some profiles marked with this location in England but line has yet to be reviewed.
  • Scotland ...
  • mainland Europe
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • United States - the Virginia line is a mystery via Mrs. Dorcus Foster does *not* connect to Sir Robert Foster of Battle, Sussex.
  • CONTINUE developing ancestor biographies. ... If you have information to share and time to edit, the family wants to read! Wikitree is similar to Wikipedia in this sense. Don't be afraid to edit! (The help pages can be accessed at the top right on the toolbar, and G2G is also a great place to ask for assistance. You can also contact me).

I'm very excited to see this as am I decent of the Forster of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland, UK. Most noticeable of Col John (John II) "of Egham House Surrey and Elim Jamaica who was something like my 7th Great-grandfather.
my grandmother was a Foster from Ballymoney, a family related to Pinkertons and Kilpatrick. One branch in Victoria BC.
Bree, I see you've added some very interesting information to my ancestor, Roland Foster (at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Foster-10084) in the Netherlands. I can add a template to all his Voster descendants if you'd like. Hopefully this study will eventually help to reveal just where in the Forster family Roland Foster fits!

Thank-you John! If you are interested in contributing, please feel free:) It's been pretty informal, so if you have any questions ... just ask. I'm sure there are a number of Forsters (Foster, Forrester) that have yet to be categorized, so help is always welcome.
